Staking Plan

Our staking strategy for Haymaker is based on using a 100 point bankroll, and we advise how many points to stake with each selection.

Typically, we stake 1 - 4 points per selection as follows:

1 point stake = 1% of your bankroll. To find your stake, multiply your bankroll by 0.01

2 point stake = 2% of your bankroll. To find your stake, multiply your bankroll by 0.02

3 point stake = 3% of your bankroll. To find your stake, multiply your bankroll by 0.03

4 point stake = 4% of your bankroll. To find your stake, multiply your bankroll by 0.04

For example, with a £1,000 bankroll and 2 point stake: 1000 X 0.02 = £20 stake.

Risk vs Reward

The above staking plan aims to find a good balance between the risks associated with betting, and the rewards we can achieve in terms of the P/L figures and perhaps most importantly, our return on capital.

If you're a more risk-averse person, or find losing runs difficult to cope with, we recommend increasing the number of points in your bankroll to 150.

This will mean a reduction in your return on capital, however it also means smaller drawdowns and makes the service easier to follow over the long-term.

Recommended Bet Types

Haymaker advises the following types of bet:

Win - Our bet wins if our selection finishes 1st.

Top 2 - Our bet wins if our selection finishes 1st or 2nd.

Top 3 - Our bet wins if our selection finishes 1st - 3rd.

(note: some bookmakers list top bets as "place betting")

Insurebet (note: some bookmakers list this as "cover bet" or "money back" bet) - Our bet wins if our selection wins, however if it places we get our full stake back. We recommend taking the following number of places, depending on how many runners there are in the race:

7 runners or less - bet "2 places"

8 - 15 runners - bet "3 places"

16 runners or more - bet "4 places"

Each Way (e/w) - Our bet wins more if our selection wins, our bet wins less if our selection places. We will include the number of places to take with each selection.

If you prefer betting to win only, no problem! You can bet all Haymaker selections to win and still make great profits, so it's personal preference.

Multiple Betting

Haymaker typically provides 1 - 3 selections per day, which means it's often possible to bet multiples:

Double: When there are 2 selections you can combine them in a "double".

Treble: When there are 3 selections you can combine them in a "treble".

Trixie: Alternatively, when there are 3 selections you can combine them in a "trixie". This contains 4 seperate bets - 3 doubles and 1 treble.

Multiple bets are completely optional and not included in the official results, however they have historically produced substantial profit. It's a more exciting type of bet with potentially large payouts, but please be aware that the strike rate is lower so you will experience longer losing runs.

Compounding your bankroll

This is a method of growing your bankroll more quickly than time would normally allow. It involves increasing your stakes as your bankroll grows, which can be done per set period of time, or per set number of bets.

A £1,000 bankroll compounded at the end of each month, may look something like this:

£1000 starting bankroll = £10 stake

£1200 bankroll after month 1 = £12 stake

£1500 bankroll after month 2 = £15 stake

£1400 bankroll after month 3 = £14 stake

£1800 bankroll after month 4 = £18 stake

And so on.

An additional option is to remove your initial investment, once your bankroll has doubled in size. Although this initially slows the rate of return, it creates a risk-free investment and is therefore a wise consideration.

The Bookmaker

Placing your bets with a bookmaker offering top odds (and "best odds guaranteed", if possible) has historically produced the greatest profits levels.

The available odds are typically higher at the 10am post time than they are later in the day, and you can use a price comparison tool such as Oddschecker.com to see which firms are offering top odds, before placing your bets.

Opening accounts with a few different bookmakers, allows you to shop around and get your bets on at top odds. Many bookmakers also offer concessions such as best odds guaranteed, where you receive better odds if the start price (SP) is higher than the odds originally taken.

The Selection Method

Haymaker does not post write-ups for each individual selection, so in this video we will explore the selection process in as much detail as we can.

Performance Review: 2020 – 2023

We have been tracking the Haymaker for a little over 3 years, and this gives us a good sample of data which allows us to clearly see how profitable the service has been to follow so far.

It also enables us to make an educated prediction, for what we can expect to earn from the service going forward.

Headline Figures

Points Profit (advised stakes): +877

Strike Rate: 49%

Return on stakes: 19%

Return on capital: 877%

Understanding Variance

Variance is something that the majority of us overlook, because the idea that we can predict exactly how much profit we will make, in advance, is both exciting and alluring.

For example, if we can make 25 points profit per month, at £20 stakes that’s £500, which would give us an income of £6,000 per year…great!

The problem is, profits from betting don’t arrive in a linear, predictable fashion - often far from it - and this is called variance. We should therefore expect plenty of variance in the short-term, and simply accept it as a necessary part of our journey to profit.

This may not be the most exciting prospect, but it is essential to your success.

For the Haymaker, the seasonal variance ranges from a loss of 16 points for the 2022 NH season, up to a profit of 232 points for the 2021 Flat season. That’s a seasonal variance of 248 points - a substantial amount!

Once we understand variance, it’s clear to see that the best way to approach our betting is to treat it as a long-term investment, and the longer we stick with one particular betting service, the more we can overcome variance and ensure a substantial profit.

Our most recent full season, the 2023 Flat season, produced +27 points profit which is towards the low-end of our seasonal range. We would therefore expect to see an improvement from the Haymaker in 2024, to get us back into contention with the average performance figures.

2024 Update: Haymaker 2.0

The Haymaker has been testing alterations to his bet placement strategy, the aim being to extract the maximum amount of value from each bet. This has largely involved an increase in the number of win and e/w bets, and a decrease in more exotic bet types, such as the "insurebet" and "top betting" markets.

The improvement in performance figures have been impressive so far:

Points Profit (advised stakes): +1,311

Strike Rate: 52%

Return on stakes: 26%

Return on capital: 1,311%

Future Prediction

We can attempt to predict our future earnings using the Average Annual P/L figure, which measures how much profit the service makes over the course of a typical year.

For Haymaker 2.0, the average annual P/L stands at +313.5 points.

Staking £10 / point, that’s £3,135 profit per year.

Staking £100 / point, that’s £31,350 profit per year.

This figures can be increased further with regular compounding i.e. increasing your stakes as your bankroll grows.

Finally, it’s important to note that the above profit figures are by no means a guarantee. However, they are the most accurate measure of profitability we can make based on the performance figures to date.
